Darwin to host National Squash Championship

Some of the country’s top squash players, including Territorian and 2020 Australian Open Champion Rhys Dowling, will soon descend on the Top End, with Darwin to host the 2022 Australian National Squash Championships from 22-26 June.

The highly-anticipated event will be staged at the Darwin Squash Centre and is the first time the Championships will take place outside of the eastern states.

Squash Australia CEO Robert Donaghue said the organisation is delighted to be bringing the event to Darwin for the first time.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase Australia’s best talent in the Northern Territory, and for the local community to have the chance to watch them in their final event before Birmingham (2022 Commonwealth Games) and become inspired to follow in their footsteps,” he said.

Players and supporters will be able to enjoy the amenities of Darwin’s world-class squash facility, which was built in 2012 to World Squash Federation standards with 12 glass-back singles courts.

The event will include classifications from Open through to graded divisions for both men and women, as well as the addition of an Under 23 men’s and women’s draw this year.

With a total prize pool of $20,000, and the prospect of an enticing Darwin getaway, the event is expected to attract players from across Australia.

Alongside the tournament, Squash Australia will also be offering referee development opportunities, with several referee activities across the five-day event.
